310, 311, 312/365 - Trees!

A black and white tree, bare, with branches cracking the sky.

A bare tree in the old Hecla Cemetery in Laurium. The cemetery has long been abandoned, and this tree stands stark against the sky with old graves beneath it. Sarah and I made it there while geocaching, looking for a cache located under an old tree. Turns out we had the wrong coordinates, but we found this excellent tree instead!

A huge old tree between two modern buildings.

A huge old tree on the Michigan Tech campus. It's referred to by many as the "Big Oak", except that... it's not an oak! I'm not actually sure what it is. Whatever it is, it's the only tree for miles which still has leaves.

got any close-ups of the leaves? From the form, it looks like it could be an Oak. But the resolution on the leaves isn't good enough for me to tell leaf shape.

I agree, it looks like an oak. I always thought it was, until I looked close. Strangely, the leaves look more like an aspen, which it definitely is not.

It could be an old Turkish Filbert. Do the leaves look like these:
Filbert Leaf

Hm, sort of. I need to go collect one. The leaves don't look like they have the same compound teeth as the filbert.

Aha! Yes, it IS a cottonwood. Confirmed by a comment on flickr, as well. :)
