Birch

A white birch against a dark blue sky.
Birch with a winter sky
Prints of this photo are available.

Here's a photo from my trip out to the Tech Trails a few weekends ago. Yes, that was an amazing trip -- in particular, I snowshoed on the School Forest loops, which go through the Houghton High School's school forest.

Along the way, I found this amazing view. There is nothing quite so striking as the trunk of a birch rising up against a clear blue winter sky. Birches are tricky: they look like nothing special for most of the year, but in the middle of winter they really show how beautiful they are. Their bark is surprisingly colorful, and they really show themselves well when there are no leaves to hide them. Enjoy!

As always, please feel free to leave a comment -- tell me what you like, dislike, or just tell me a random story!

You captured it beautifully. I don't know too much about trees or their names, but I learned very early about the birch tree and its white bark.

We had one growing in my backyard when I was. a child. Thanks for the memory

I found your website from today's pictures posted on www.pasty.com. I just wanted to say you have an amazing talent. The manner in which you frame your photos turns them into pieces of art. Good luck with your photography. Please pursue it. The world needs to know......

@Lisa: Thanks. Birches are probably my second favorite tree... after white pines. :) But birches are far more striking in the winter!

@Anon: Glad you made it over here from pasty.com! And thanks for the great compliments. Keep checking back, I promise I'll post more. :) And yes, I am definitely planning to pursue photography, at least on the side...

Well, I discovered the blogspot site on Facebook a little while back, and have followed since then.

I like your sense of composition, as well as sense of adventure. I get the feeling that I spent too much time indoors during my own sojourn in the Keweenaw Community Grad School...er, MTU.

Cheers, and keep up the good work.

Thanks, Steve. I think I may spend too MUCH time outside here! But of course I only did a little when I was an undergrad -- I've started spending a lot more time outside in the last few years. Ah, grad school, it drives you nuts...
